NATURE V NURTURE

Why do people commit crime?

Over the course of this one-day conference, there will be a range of interactive and engaging lectures from some of the UK’s leading names in criminology. Our keynote speaker and host on the day is one of the UK’s most influential public criminologists, star of ITV’s Bring Back Borstal and presenter of Channel 4's multi-award winning documentary, Interview with a Murderer, Professor David Wilson. Notably, the event will feature a "Networking Lunch" where students and teachers will have the opportunity to talk and interact with the speakers.

Professor Wilson will open the conference and give an introductory lecture entitled “What is Criminology?” This lecture will provide students with an introduction to the academic discipline of Criminology and discusses how the following lectures are all linked to the fundamental criminological question: why do people choose to commit crime?

PUNISHMENT & MANAGING OFFENDING BEHAVIOUR

Why do we punish those who commit crime?

What is the state hoping to achieve when it punishes an offender?  What are the main sociological, philosophical and psychological justifications for punishment?  Can punishment take a particular form that might prove to be more successful in reducing recidivism. Might restorative justice prove to be more successful than traditional forms of punishment?

This one-day Conference will introduce students to some of the key questions related to Punishment that they will encounter when studying A Level Sociology or Psychology.  The conference will also be useful to students studying other A levels such as Politics, Philosophy or History.
