CRME Teacher Training

Foundations in Criminological Theory

Friday 26th April 2019 (10:00 - 16:00)

Malmaison Birmingham, The Mailbox, 1 Wharfside St, Birmingham, B1 1RD

Registration Open

Overview:

This bespoke training event has been exclusively designed to assist teachers who are new to the teaching of Criminology and is closely related to Unit 2: Criminological Theories of the Level 3 Criminology qualification.  Delivered by some of the leading Criminologists in the country, teachers will be introduced to the key theoretical building blocks of the discipline.

The conference aims to explore the foundations of criminological theory, including both classical (free will/rationality) and positivist (biological/psychological/sociological) theoretical explanations of crime. In addition to this, the conference aims to contextualise criminological theory within a social and political context, allowing teachers to understand how and why certain theories are more "popular" at certain times with policymakers.

Speakers on the day will draw upon their first-hand experience and knowledge of working on particular cases of homicide and violent crime and will demonstrate how relevant criminological theory can be applied to aid understanding of offending behaviour. The “Teaching Criminology” workshop will provide an opportunity for teachers to engage with the speakers who will be sharing practical techniques and activities that they use in their own teaching to help students understand and apply theory to both historic and contemporary cases.

A maximum of 30 places is available so as to facilitate discussion. All delegates will receive a conference pack, which includes practical teaching activities and other useful resources. Lunch will be provided and complimentary refreshments will be available throughout the day. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
